Thanks for trying Dash Board, Five Speed Software's "insanely functional" button bar for MP2000-series machines. Dash Board replaces the built-in system button bar, adding many useful features, such as:
- a fully customizable, hierarchical Newton Menu
- Running and Recent apps menus
- many built in shortcuts for common tasks
- support for creating and editing user scripts
- the Letter Launcher box, which allows instant access to any program, shortcut, or script, simply by writing a single letter.
- and of course, Much Much More¬ (no Ginsu Knives available, however)
Because Dash Board replaces the button bar, all of Dash Board's functionality is always right there for you to use.

2. System Requirements
Dash Board requires a MessagePad 2000 or MessagePad 2100. It does not run on any other Newton Device.
3. Installation
Dash Board should generally be installed on the internal store. This is not mandatory, but it will be inconvenient if it is installed on a card that is removed. If you leave your card in your Newton device all the time, then installing Dash Board on the card will work fine. You can install the Dash Board Prefs package anywhere (however you cannot edit Dash Board's preferences unless the Dash Board Prefs package is installed).
To install Dash Board, simply use your favorite package installer software (for example, Newton Package Installer from Apple Computer, Inc.) to install the Dash Board and Dash Board Prefs packages onto your Newton device.
4. Compatibility Notes
GENERAL ISSUES
Dash Board is a replacement for the system button bar. As one might expect, it is generally not compatible with other button bar replacements. Except as noted below, there are no known compatibility issues with other apps which don't directly affect the button bar.
Extensions or utilities which modify the button bar may cause Dash Board not to work. Specifically, Dash Board utilities which change the size or location of the system button bar will prevent Dash Board from working properly. If such utilities are installed, Dash Board will generally display an alert with details.
Extensions which add features to the built-in button bar may not be visible when Dash Board is installed. Hopefully, you will find that Dash Board fulfills all of your button bar-related needs.
Dash Board can optionally thaw and launch frozen packages when they are chosen from a Dash Board menu, and refreeze them when they are closed. However, if you have another utility installed that does this, you should turn Dash Board's "Frozen Apps" preferences options off.
SPECIFIC COMPATIBILITY ISSUES
- FreezeMan (by Stand Alone Software) - Dash Board's automatic refreezing of packages which Dash Board thawed is disabled if FreezeMan is installed. (FreezeMan will handle refreezing thawed packages, so the option is not necessary in Dash Board if FreezeMan is installed).
- TapBar (by Yosuke "Basuke" Suzuki) - TapBar patches the system in such a way that Dash Board cannot track recently-launched applications which are not launched from Dash Board; packages which are launched by tapping their icon in the Extras Drawer will not appear in Dash Board's Recent Apps menu if TapBar is installed. (As of this writing, the current version of TapBar is 1.1.)
- Start Bar (by Stand Alone Software) - Dash Board is not compatible with Start Bar. Dash Board will refuse to open if this program is installed and active.
- Button Bar Plus (by Stand Alone Software) - Dash Board is not compatible with Button Bar Plus. Dash Board will refuse to open if this program is installed and active.

PLEASE READ THIS SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT ("LICENSE") CAREFULLY. BY USING THE SOFTWARE YOU ARE AGREEING TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS OF THIS LICENSE.
1. License. The software, documentation and any fonts accompanying this License whether on disk, in read only memory, on any other media or in any other form (the "Five Speed Product") are licensed to you by Five Speed Software ("Five Speed"). You own the media on which the Five Speed Product is recorded but Five Speed retains title to the Five Speed Product. The Five Speed Product in this package and any copies which this License authorizes you to make are subject to this License.
2. Permitted Uses and Restrictions. This License allows you to install and use the Five Speed Product on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Five Speed Product to exist on more than one computer at a time. You may make one copy of the Five Speed Product in machine-readable form for backup purposes only. The backup copy must include all copyright information contained on the original. Your exclusive remedy under this paragraph shall be, at Five Speed╒s option, a refund of the purchase price of the product containing the Five Speed Product or replacement of the Five Speed Product which is returned to Five Speed or an Five Speed authorized representative with a copy of the receipt. In no event shall Five Speed╒s total liability to you for all damages exceed the amount of fifty dollars ($50.00).
6. Export Law Assurances. You may not use or otherwise export or reexport the Five Speed Product except as authorized by United States law and the laws of the jurisdiction in which the Five Speed Product was obtained. In particular, but without limitation, the Five Speed Product may not be exported or reexported (i) into (or to a national or resident of) any U.S. embargoed country or (ii) to anyone on the U.S. Treasury Department's list of Specially Designated Nationals or the U.S. Department of Commerce's Table of Denial Orders. By using the Five Speed Product, you represent and warrant that you are not located in, under control of, or a national or resident of any such country or on any such list.
7. Government End Users. If the Five Speed Product is supplied to the United States Government, the Five Speed Product is classified as "restricted computer software" as defined in clause 52.227-19 of the FAR. The United States Government's rights to the Five Speed Product are as provided in clause 52.227-19 of the FAR.
8. Controlling Law and Severability. If there is a local subsidiary of Five Speed in the country in which the Five Speed Product License was obtained, then the local law in which the subsidiary sits shall govern this License. Otherwise, this License shall be governed by the laws of the United States and the State of California. If for any reason a court of competent jurisdiction finds any provision, or portion thereof, to be unenforceable, the remainder of this License shall continue in full force and effect.
9. Complete Agreement. This License constitutes the entire agreement between the parties with respect to the use of the Five Speed Product and supersedes all prior or contemporaneous understandings regarding such subject matter. No amendment to or modification of this License will be binding unless in writing and signed by Five Speed.
